A shop floor camera spots a worker approaching a press brake without wrist restraints and disables the machine. This is not science fiction; it is off-the-shelf hardware available to SMBs right now. But while the engineering problem of "seeing" hazards is solved, the human problem of "surveillance" is just beginning.
Implementing AI safety tools is not like buying a new fire extinguisher. It involves pointing an unblinking eye at your workforce 24/7. If you roll this out as a "gotcha" tool to catch rule-breakers, you will torch your safety culture faster than you can prevent an accident. The key is to frame the technology as a guardian, not a guard.
The Tech: What It Actually Does
Modern computer vision systems do not "watch" people in the way a security guard does. They look for patterns. They identify "forklift + human + proximity < 5 feet." They identify "person in hard hat zone - hard hat."
The best systems process this data on the edge (on the device itself) and only record the snippet of video when a trigger event happens. This is a crucial distinction to explain to your team. "We are not recording your 8-hour shift to see if you checked your phone. We are only recording the 10 seconds where the forklift almost hit the racking."
The Fear: Big Brother is Automating
Put yourself in the boots of a warehouse picker. You hear "AI cameras" and you assume management wants to squeeze more productivity out of you or find reasons to fire you. This anxiety leads to behavior that undermines safety—workers taping over lenses, finding blind spots, or working in a state of nervous tension that actually increases error rates.

Policy: The "No Discipline" Rule

"Joe, you triggered the alarm three times," is a conversation that ends trust.
Transparency: Show the Data
Don't hide the dashboard in the manager's office. Put the safety metrics on the break room TV. Show the "Near Misses Prevented" count. Show the heat maps of high-traffic danger zones.
When workers see that the data is being used to fix blind corners, repair floor potholes, or adjust shift overlapping to reduce congestion, they buy in. They realize the "eye" is looking at the environment, not just at them.
Privacy Zones and Limits
Be explicit about where cameras are not. Restrooms, break areas, and locker rooms must remain off-limits. This seems obvious, but clearly stating it in your policy helps.
Also, define data retention. "We delete non-incident footage after 24 hours." "We only keep accident clips for investigation." These limits matter. They show respect for the worker's right to not be archived forever.
The Feedback Loop
Finally, give workers a way to challenge the AI. These systems produce false positives. If the forklift slows down because it "saw" a cardboard cutout and thought it was a person, the operator needs a way to report that frustration. If they feel the machine is wrong and they have no voice, they will disable the machine.
AI is a tool, just like a torque wrench or a safety harness. It only works if the human using it trusts it. In 2026, the competitive advantage won't go to the shop with the most cameras; it will go to the shop where the workers trust the cameras enough to let them do their job.
