The silica standard offers a specified exposure control route: follow the listed controls for a listed task and you do not have to measure exposure. Most masonry work is on that list, and most crews already use water or dust collection. What is missing is the written plan, the named competent person and the medical surveillance trigger — the paperwork that turns a good practice into a defensible one.

Does using water on a saw make us compliant with the silica rule?
It is the core control for several listed tasks, but the standard also requires a written exposure control plan, a competent person, housekeeping practices and, above certain exposure durations, medical surveillance. Water alone is not the whole obligation.

When does a masonry wall need bracing?
Walls over eight feet in height that are not adequately supported must be braced to prevent overturning and collapse until permanent supporting elements are in place, with a limited access zone established before construction begins.
Who can erect a scaffold?
Erection, moving, dismantling or altering must happen under the supervision of a competent person, with the work performed by experienced and trained employees selected by that person.
