Extractors, Ironers, and Soiled Linen: The OSHA Standard Written for Laundries
OSHA 1910.264 governs commercial laundry machinery — extractor interlocks, ironer finger guards, and soiled linen handling. What small laundries must fix now.
Commercial laundry is one of those trades that looks harmless from the customer side of the counter. Clean linen goes out, dirty linen comes in, and the equipment hums along in the back. But OSHA thought the hazards were distinct enough to write a standard specifically for the industry — 29 CFR 1910.264, "Laundry machinery and operations" — and the machines it describes have a long record of crushing hands, catching arms, and pulling people into moving cylinders.
If you run a laundromat with commercial-grade equipment, a dry cleaning plant, a uniform or linen rental service, a hotel with an in-house laundry, or a hospital or nursing home that processes its own linen, this standard applies. It is old, narrow, and almost never discussed in trade publications, which is exactly why an inspector can walk your production floor and find violations in the first ten minutes.
The Extractor Interlock Is Where People Lose Arms
The provision that matters most in a small plant is the interlock requirement for extractors. A centrifugal extractor spins a basket at high speed to pull water out of a load, and it takes a long time to coast down after power is cut. OSHA requires that these machines be equipped with an interlocking device that keeps the cover closed while the basket is in motion and prevents the machine from starting while the cover is open. Washer-extractors and cylinder washers get similar treatment: the door should not open while the cylinder is turning.
That interlock gets defeated constantly, and the reason is always production pressure. An operator wants to shave forty seconds off a coast-down, so someone jams the latch, disconnects the switch, or lets a failed interlock go unrepaired because a service call costs money and the machine still "works." A spinning extractor basket does not care about your throughput. An arm reaching into one that is still turning at even a few hundred RPM will be broken before the operator registers what happened.
The fix is not a policy. It is walking to every extractor and washer-extractor on your floor this week, opening and closing the cover with the machine running, and taking out of service any unit where the interlock does not do exactly what it is supposed to do. Document the test. Then pair it with 29 CFR 1910.147, because clearing a jam, pulling a tangled load, or cleaning a drum is servicing — and the interlock protects normal operation, while lockout/tagout protects the person with their hands inside.
Flatwork Ironers and Presses Need Guards at the Feed End
Section 1910.264 also addresses flatwork ironers, which is the piece of equipment most likely to injure a low-tenure employee. Feeding sheets into heated rollers is repetitive work performed at speed, and a hand that follows a wrinkle into the nip is not coming back out on its own. The standard requires a guard at the feed end that keeps fingers out of the rolls, along with an accessible emergency stop that any operator on the line can reach without leaving their station.
Two things go wrong in real shops. The guard rod gets bent, disabled, or tied back because it trips on thick items and stops production. And the emergency stop is functional but blocked — a cart parked in front of it, a linen bin stacked against it, or a bar mounted where only the lead operator can reach it. Both are citable, and both are fixable in an afternoon.
Hand-operated presses in dry cleaning are the same story in miniature. Two-hand controls exist so that both of an operator's hands are occupied and out of the head when it descends. If someone has taped or wired one button down so the press can be run single-handed, you have a machine that will close on a hand, and you have it because a manager tolerated it.
Soiled Linen Is a Chemical and Biological Problem
The machinery is only half of the exposure. Sorting soiled linen means handling whatever came back in it. If your plant processes healthcare, veterinary, tattoo studio, or first-aid linen, 29 CFR 1910.1030 applies: contaminated laundry must be handled as little as possible, bagged or containerized at the location of use rather than sorted on your floor, labeled or color-coded, and handled by employees wearing appropriate gloves and protection. Sharps buried in linen are the classic injury, and the control is upstream — in what your customer is required to send you, written into the service agreement.
Dry cleaners have a second exposure. Perchloroethylene remains regulated under 1910.1000 Table Z-2 with an 8-hour time-weighted average PEL of 100 ppm and a 200 ppm ceiling, and machine maintenance, filter changes, and still cleanouts are where operators see the highest concentrations. If you have never characterized those tasks, you do not actually know where you stand.
What to Do This Week
Test every extractor and washer interlock yourself and write down the result. Walk the ironer line and confirm the feed-end guard is intact and the emergency stop is reachable and unblocked. Check your presses for defeated two-hand controls. Then look at what arrives on your dock and decide whether your people are sorting anything they should never have been asked to touch bare-handed.
